Nordita Lectures

Traditionally, the Nordita Lectures have been talks where one Nordita researcher presents her or his work to fellow Norditians, on a level accessible also to non-experts in the field. Under the same heading other lecture series or courses may be given. The Lectures are of course open also to anyone else who is interested in our research.

(For other events, see Scientific Programs, Workshops and Conferences, Summer Schools and Nordita Courses.)

THE QUANTUM HALL EFFECT: FROM SINGLE PARTICLE STATES TO NON-ABELIAN STATISTICS
Eddy Ardonne
In this talk (which is geared towards the non-specialists), the concept of non-abelian statistics will be explained in a few easy steps. We will start from the single particle states of 2-dimensional electrons in a magnetic field. The many particle Laughlin wave function follows from a simple variational argument. In a certain limit (called the thin-torus), the Laughlin wave function reduces to a particularly simple form. It is in this limit that we will introduce the concept of non-abelian statistics.
Time: 26 September 2008 from 13:15 to 14:00.
Place: The Quantum Chemistry seminar room 122:026 (Roslagstullsbacken 17)

MULTIBAND PROBLEM WITH BOSONS IN AN OPTICAL LATTICE
Jani-Petri Martikainen
I will discuss a still ongoing work about bosons in an optical lattice. My focus will be to discuss progress and some interesting features of the phase-diagram when bosons can also occupy higher bands of an optical lattice.
Time: 12 September 2008 from 13:15 to 14:00.
Place: The Quantum Chemistry seminar room 122:026 (Roslagstullsbacken 17)
