History

NORDITA, the Nordic Institute for Theoretical Physics, was founded in 1957 on the basis of an initiative of Niels Bohr and Torsten Gustafsson, followed by a recommendation from the Nordic Council. The institute operates as a research institute under the Nordic Council of Ministers.

NORDITA's purpose is to carry out research within theoretical physics and to strengthen the Nordic collaboration within the basic areas of theoretical physics. The research areas at NORDITA include astrophysics, condensed matter physics, biological physics and subatomic physics. The institute is located on the premises of AlbaNova University Center in Stockholm.

The scientific staff includes six positions as permanent professors, four positions as assistant professors and a number of Nordic assistant professors. In addition there is a fellowship program for Nordic postdocs and graduate students. The institute's activities include an extensive visitor program for scientists from all over the world and symposia and summer schools arranged by NORDITA itself or in cooporation with other Nordic institutes.

NORDITA is governed by a board consisting of one member and one alternate from each Nordic country. The board appoints a number of scientific committees which evaluate proposals and advice the board on scientific and educational matters.
